The Labrador retriever
This is a great family dog and has always been very popular in the UK. According to data examined by the BBC earlier this year, it is the top dog by quite some distance. The BBC used data collected from microchipping companies over 10 years.
- The Jack Russell
The second most popular breed was the Jack Russell. This has been the case throughout the past few years. It is a small and stocky breed that is quite resilient.
- The Staffordshire bull terrier
This came in slightly behind the Jack Russell, snagging third place as it did so. The dog is a cross between a terrier and a bulldog.
What about the top three based on The Kennel Club registrations?
The Kennel Club registers pure-bred puppies in the UK. Their top three actually worked out somewhat differently from the top three according to microchipping information. Perhaps this will change in 2016 when microchipping your puppy or dog becomes compulsory.

This is where the original list doesn’t change. The dog may come top in the UK but this is true of dog owners in other countries as well, who have also ensured this dog is number one. With proper training, they can develop into wonderful family dogs.

What about other popular breeds?
There has been a trend in people searching online for information on certain breeds in the past year or two. Among the breeds popping up most often in these searches are the German shepherd, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel, and the Lhasa Apso.
